Answers to some of your most frequently asked questions

How does Lia work?

Lia works like other at-home pregnancy tests, only more sustainably and more discreetly! Lia measures the presence of the hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. hCG can be detected approximately 9 days after an egg is fertilized—and hCG levels double every 2-3 days early in your pregnancy. The Lia flushable pregnancy test detects small amounts of this hormone in your urine with over 99% accuracy.* (Test sensitivity is 22mlU/ml).

How do I use Lia?

For more information on how to test with Lia, check out the Instructions for Use.

How sensitive is the Lia pregnancy test?

We set out to make a reliable, flushable, accurate pregnancy test that’s better for women and better for the environment. Like other major brand at-home pregnancy tests, Lia is over 99% accurate starting from the first day of your missed period. The Lia flushable pregnancy test detects small amounts of the hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. And for all our sister scientists out there, the test sensitivity is 22mlU/ml.

When should I take the test?

You can take the test any time of day, but you’ll get better results if you test your first pee of the morning. If you’re pregnant, it will have the highest concentration of hCG you’ll have all day. Also, avoid drinking too much water or other liquids before testing. You could dilute the hormone especially if you’re in the first few days of pregnancy and very little hCG is present.

What’s Lia’s shelf life?

Lia has a shelf life of 18-months in it's pouch under normal conditions. Do not remove the test from the pouch until you are ready to test. The expiration date can be found on the packaging. Just be sure to store Lia in a dry place below 86F (30C), don’t let it freeze and handle it with care. Pro tip: don’t store Lia in the trunk of your car.

When/where can I buy Lia?

Lia is available for pre-order and will soon be available online for a quick, easy, discreet purchase. Sign up for our email newsletter to be the first to know when Lia is shipping.

Will Lia clog like some “flushable” wipes out there?

Nope — Lia is safe for most plumbing systems and homes, even ones with septic systems. The Lia pregnancy test is flushable and completely biodegrades in wastewater. It’s made of the same natural, plant fibers as most toilet paper, with our proprietary coating that repels water long enough to take the test but breaks down when you flush. Plus, the Lia pregnancy test is compostable. Check your local municipality for rules and restrictions on composting. Just make sure you only flush one at a time, and that you don’t flush or compost the packaging, test wrapper or desiccant (silica gel pack). Tested using ISO 16929 Municipal Composting Study.

What if I have an older home?

Awesome. We love old digs with great character. But older homes are often equipped with older, fragile plumbing systems and can be at higher risk of clogging from toilet paper alone. In our tests, the Lia pregnancy test performs well when flushed one at a time in homes with standard-flow, well-maintained sewer and septic systems. If you are concerned about your plumbing, tearing Lia into smaller pieces or letting it sit in the toilet for a few minutes before flushing may help. Since the product softens with water before breaking apart, this will improve flushability. Make sure you only flush one at a time, and that you don’t flush the packaging, test wrapper or desiccant (silica gel pack). Or if you want to be super safe, dispose of the Lia pregnancy test by other means like in your compost or trash bin. Be sure to check your local municipality for rules and restrictions on composting. Tested using ISO 16929 Municipal Composting Study.

Is Lia septic-safe?

Yes. Lia is safe for most plumbing systems and homes, even ones with septic systems. The Lia pregnancy test is flushable and completely biodegrades in water. Make sure that you flush one at a time, and that you don’t flush the packaging, test wrapper or desiccant (silica gel pack). The Lia pregnancy test is also compostable or can be tossed in your trash bin in a pinch. Be sure to check your local municipality for rules and restrictions on composting. Tested using ISO 16929 Municipal Composting Study.

Can I flush the packaging?

Not yet! Do not flush packaging, test wrapper or desiccant (silica gel pack). We have a flushable
package option in the works, but for now Lia comes packaged in a non-flushable, sustainably
sourced card stock.

Is Lia biodegradable?

The Lia pregnancy test is more than 98% biodegradable in soil in just 3 months!* We are also currently doing more biodegradability testing. Tested using ISO 16929 Municipal Composting Study.

Can I compost Lia?

Yes. You can dispose of the Lia pregnancy test strip in your compost (but not the packaging, test wrapper, or desiccant). Please check your local municipality for composting rules and restrictions. Tested using ISO 16929 Municipal Composting Study.

Is the packaging biodegradable, too?

We have a flushable and biodegradable package option in the works, but for now Lia will be packaged in non-flushable, sustainably sourced card stock. Do not flush packaging, test wrapper or desiccant (silica gel pack). Please compost or recycle the package if your community offers cardstock recycling.

Is Lia made in the US?

Yes. Lia is proudly made and packaged in the USA.
